History

Cause Célèbre Productions, a 501(c)(3) founded in 2007 by award-winning playwright, screenwriter, and producer Susan Charlotte, was driven by her commitment to combine theatre with social relevance. The organization extends her vision of using the dramatic arts to explore and illuminate important psychological, physical, and social justice issues. The company debuted at The Players in New York City, establishing its commitment to high-caliber theatrical talent.

Rooted in the belief that storytelling can expose injustice and provoke change, Cause Célèbre produces original and classic plays, readings, and panel discussions that align with its mission. Many works are inspired by real-life stories and focus on mental illness, wrongful imprisonment, and challenges facing the elderly. The company collaborates with esteemed legal figures, scholars, and performers to create programming that engages both intellectually and emotionally.

Among the work of Cause Célèbre  is a theatrical exploration of landmark legal cases argued by renowned First Amendment attorney  Martin Garbus. The series All the Court's a Stage  dramatizes Garbus' most controversial and socially impactful cases. Through plays like Unlucky Gal and Last Chance Cafe, the company brings to life the human stories behind high-stakes legal battles; exploring themes of censorship, justice, identity, and moral responsibility. These works celebrate the role of the law in shaping society while inviting audiences to grapple with ethical dilemmas underlying real court decisions.

Cause Célèbre's  founder, Susan Charlotte, also launched Food For Thought Productions, a highly acclaimed for-profit theatre company, in 2000. The two companies have distinct missions.  Food For Thought focuses on one-act plays while Cause Célèbre is a nonprofit that uses theatre to spotlight important causes, educate audiences on critical issues, and connect productions to specific social concerns to raise their visibility.
